You’ve read “A Year in Provence”. This book was turned down because “everyone was writing the same thing”, but this is a very different story.
In 1990 the author and her husband left England to farm in France. They say the first five years are the worst. This is five years of farming a flock of 350 insane French sheep at the same time diversifying into the bed and breakfast business whilst bottle rearing orphan lambs, teaching English, supervising ram gang-bangs, making cider and calvados and taking in horses at livery. An entertaining read with the feel good factor.
Extracts:
(Bed and Breakfast) Our very first, unannounced, guests turned up one evening when the kitchen sink was full to overflowing with assorted lamb paraphernalia: tubes, bottles, teats. A twenty five kilo sack of Ewes Milk Replacer powder was in the middle of the kitchen floor and the whole area was lightly coated in its fine, sticky, yellow dust. I glanced out of the window and saw an English car drive into the yard.
(Teaching) One of the first questions I was asked was how to say “merde” in English. The jolly young woman who had requested this information digested the answer silently. Another thing they were keen to know in addition to “Je ne parle pas Anglais” which I felt was somewhat defeatist was “Je ne sais pas.” They were taking it all in I was pleased to note. I asked a simple question of my young farmer’s wife.
“Sheet” she replied. “I do not speak English, I do not know.”
I was making great progress.
Feedback received includes the following:
I thoroughly enjoyed "Fraiche Fields". Your description of the fat little Shetland pony is hilarious and what fun with all the cats.
What a good idea to sell the book on E-Bay, let me know when it will be on so I can have a look. Carole Cumber, Canada
I have just finished "Fraiche Fields" and I did enjoy it, what an insight into your life in France, the people of the village and the animals that you have shared your life with. I think you have a real talent for telling a story and I do hope that you will continue to try for publication. It is such a warm and interesting look at your life and I have learned more about France and its farming community than I ever would have known,
Thank you so much, Carol
Have started to read your book and I think it is great. I am now going to read some more, my husband will have to wait for dinner!! Kathy
... have just finished your book and I loved it. Very witty and also sad at the same time. Kathy.
I have just finished reading your book. Well done! Really interesting - you make it feel as if I was there with you all! I now need to be in France again, fast! Ian
